May visit to GAU Prep School

KAR Education Team visited GAU Prep School in May and youngsters in Year 1 learned more about how to look after their pets. The children took part in role-playing activities and had fun learning how to learn what their cats or dogs are saying to them through their posture or sounds.  The pupils presented the KAR Education Team, Maggie Smith and Pam Kennedy, with a 'Thank You' book full of drawings and notes about the team's visit to the school. They were also presented with a certificate at their school assembly.

Animal Club Members Visit KAR Rescue Centre

Ten Members of the English School of Kyrenia Animal Club visited the KAR Rescue Centre on Saturday 13 November.

The children aged from 9 to 10 years, along with parents and the Club Supervisor, Yasemin Muslu, were given a guided tour by two members of the KAR Education Team, Maggie Smith and Pam Kennedy.

The children visited all the 200 dogs and 35 cats at the centre and enjoyed handling some of the abandoned puppies. They then gave the dogs a treat by taking some of them for a country walk around the outskirts of the centre in the beautiful Besparmak countryside.

Yasemin was kind enough to donate a whole tray of ‘Rokus’ dog food to the Centre, which will be really appreciated by the dogs.

The children were told how the Centre started, why the dogs and cats were at the Centre, the need for money to feed the animals and the role of the Education Team in spreading the word to the community about neutering dogs and cats to prevent the numbers of unwanted puppies and kittens from rising.

The children were given a worksheet to complete and a new leaflet, designed by the KAR team, especially aimed at children.

Yasemin said: “The children loved the visit to the Rescue Centre, even the ones who were a bit scared to be around dogs at the beginning. I enjoyed it too but could not have arranged the visit without the help of Pam and Maggie, the KAR Education Team. I am now planning a ‘Dog Walk Day’ on the 14
th December, when all the children will being their own dogs with their parents and will go for a walk from the school up into the mountains, like we did at the Rescue Centre. We are also holding a Charity Day on Tuesday 7th December and the money raised will be donated to KAR.”

Management Centre Visit

Twenty students aged between 15 and 17, from five Turkish Cypriot Schools in Lefkoşa, under the supervision of Fetine Yıldırımtürk of the Management Centre and Lefkoşa Türk Lisesi teacher Clive Smillie, visited the KAR Arapköy Animal Centre on Saturday 27 November.

The visit was part of a US Embassy funded project, linked to the TRNC school English curriculum, that aims ‘to help children in deprived areas to learn English as well as to build relationships between the TRNC and the US. The present one year project is reaching its conclusion with a new one due to start in February 2011.

The five schools represented in the Centre visit were: Hyderpaşa Ticaret Lisesi [Hyderpaşa Commerce High School], Atatürk Meslek Lisesi [Atatürk Vocational High School], Bülent Ecevit Anadolu Lisesi [Bülent Ecevit Anatolian High School] and Lefkoşa Türk Lisesi [Nicosia Turkish High School]. As well as supplying books and equipment the project expects all aspects of it to be conducted by native English language tutors with students asked to speak English while outside the classrooms. This was most certainly the case on Saturday with those who had mastered English the best translating for the as yet weaker ones.

The visiting students were divided into two groups in order to tour the dog compounds and the cattery as well as take dogs on leashes for a walk before receiving a well earned drink upon completion of the morning visit.

Fetine Yıldırımtürk presented a generous cheque donation to KAR representatives, Suzanne, Maggie and Pam, which was very gratefully received and will be used towards the care of the animals at the Rescue Centre. The visit had been organised by the KAR Education Team and was enjoyed by all concerned.

A special thank you goes to the volunteers who helped the visit run so well on Saturday and the Rescue Centre staff for their help and hard work.

May School Visits

Starting 18th May the team visited Kyrenia English School where they taught the Animal Welfare syllabus to: one class of Year 3, two classes of Year 4, and one class each of Years 5 and 6.
Over a three week period the team attended the school for three days each week during which time the pupils, as part of their English work, read out stories about pets, showing that they had researched the topic on the internet. They later brought in their pets including a terrapin, a tortoise, a hamster and a cockatiel.
The team joined the children at their school lunches and reported that the pupils’ competence in English varied with each class.

March School Visits

Girne Belediye, with authorisation from the Minister for Education, arranged for the team to visit 23 Nisan school in Girne on 9th March.  The school has requested that the Education Team deliver 4 x 40 minute sessions to each of 6 classes of Year 5 students before the end of April.  The first session took place on 16th March and the rest of the sessions will be timetabled in.  In total 180 children will have taken part in the course and will be eligible for their certificates.
It has been agreed that the team could talk to the children about the importance of neutering.
Girne Belediye provided the folders and printed the worksheets and contents for the Student Packs.  Folders and worksheets were subsequently supplied.  This teaching programme is part of an ongoing programme with both the school and the Belediye looking at KAR organising further sessions in September.
180 children received the first lessons. Folders were distributed. The teaching programme was well received.  On 21st March the Mayor of Girne attended a photo/media session that was covered by both Cyprus Today and ADA TV.

February School Visits

PK & MS visited the Judy Porter English Reading School to teach 40 children between the ages of 2 and 5 years!  Three sessions were delivered, with one to a group of 18 children in the first week, another group of 22 the next week and both groups brought together for the role play and to receive their certificates in the final week.
Because of the young ages of the children the teaching material had to be very interactive. The children responded very well and the feedback from staff and parents has been very positive.

2010 School Visit Diary

The KAR Education Team was recently given permission by both the Turkish Cypriot Minister for Education and the Girne Belediye to visit the 23 Nisan School, Girne.
The Team delivered the ‘Animals and Us’ and ‘Safe and Sound’ Animal Welfare Educational Programme to 180 Children in Year 5 and some in Year 4 at the school.
This is the first time that the programme has been delivered to a TRNC State School and the KAR team would like to thank them for welcoming us to their school.
Animal Welfare education will continue in Turkish State schools in September after the summer break.
