ANIMALS RETURNING TO THE UK UNDER THE NEW REGULATIONS
As from 1st January 2012 the regulations for animals
travelling into the UK changed bringing to an end the 6 months
quarantine period that pets had previously had to comply with.
(background info on KAR website – animals to uk). This is very good
news for all pet owners in North Cyprus and for KAR who have been
campaigning for changes in the regulations for many years.
On Friday 20th January a dog from the KAR rescue centre named
Dexter travelled under the new regulations from Ercan to Paris, was
met by his new owners Amanda and Darren Faragher who then
transported him in their car through the Channel Tunnel to the UK
and onwards to his new forever home in Shropshire. (photos with
Susie)
Dexter is the first KAR dog to travel under these new regulations which
do not now require a Pet Passport but as North Cyprus is a listed
‘Third Country’ a Microchip, Rabies Vaccination, Rabies Serological
Test, Export Certificate a Third Country Health Certificate and a
wait of three months following the date of the successful Rabies
Serological Test fulfils all the regulations required. Unfortunately
there are no approved carriers or direct routes from the TRNC into
the UK as yet and so the animals have to travel via another country.
KAR have arranged for a UK based animal courier company to transport
fifteen animals from the TRNC to the UK early in February and this
will be followed by similar trips over the next few months.

Molly n Polly
Hi Margaret,
As promised some photos of the babes, today we are celebrating their
third year with us.
Molly is the tom boy of the two, Polly is just a lady. They love the
beach not too keen on the
sea, our other dogs love the water.

Here's wishing you all a Happy New Year, and we wish you all
well for 2012 lets hope
it's good for all of us.
Will keep in touch, and hopefully see you sometime in June.
Regards Yvonne and Jeremy
I just cannot believe that it is 5 years since the GANG arrived
over here. It was so very cold that the vet at the quarantine
kennels had grave doubts that Morgan would cope as his body
weight was so very low. We now have the opposite problem and
have to ration his food a little, although I have promised him
not over the festive season.
Mottley is still just like an oversized
puppy, I think he will always remain sountil he joins the great
kennel in the sky.
Connie bless her has had a few problems as
a lot of older ladies do but a visit to the vet and propaline
seems to have sorted things
I still find it hard to believe that the
GANG have become such wonderful pets, so affectionate and just
so willing to please, even Mottley sometimes!!
We still miss Penny, especially Caroline
of course, but her new little rescue dogis very grateful to have
found a lovely home with her.
Please, please, please anyone who is considering adopting a KAR
dog please, please do so. You will never regret it, the love,
fun, joy and laughter we have had with ours is just immense.
My eldestdaughter is arriving in the next
few days, and as she is so much better than myself at loading
photos onto the computer we will hopefully be sending up to date
photos to you of the GANG.
We went into Carmarthen yesterday 21/12
and deposited a cheque for £100 for the usual chew stick treats
from the Mottley Crew for all their friends over there, they did
give me a reference in the bank but being me I have managed to
mislay it, if a problem please let me know and I will try to
retrieve it.
We hope you all have a really lovely Christmas and hope to see
you all in the near future.
Love to you ALL
Vicki, Bob and Caroline and of course THE MOTTLEY CREW
Following the change in
the rules/regs for dogs going to UK (Jan 2012) - an overland animal
transporter will be arriving in Kyrenia on/about 02/02/12 to take 12
dogs back to UK.
8 of those dogs are KAR street dogs who are going to "forever" homes
in UK. They will depart TRNC, for their 6 day journey, to their
"forever" homes on/about 04/02/12.
There is space available for dogs/cats to travel UK (depart 24 -26
Jan) to TRNC on the overlander. The overlander (and company) are
fully registered in the UK and are DEFRA approved. The vehicle is
purpose built with individual units/heating/a.c and the animals have
regular meal and comfort breaks. They are not left unattended at all
during the trip.
The cost of the trip will be shared amongst all the animals using
the service (to/from TRNC). This may work out cheaper than flying
them (especially with large/heavy dogs). For more info please
contact the KAR office on 0533 8694098.
It is hoped that this will be the first of many such trips.
We are always delighted when one of our dogs or cats finds a new
home, and we love to receive letters and emails telling us how they
are getting on. If you have a Kyrenia Animal Rescue animal and
you'd like to tell us about their new life, please post or email us
your letters and pictures, or drop them in at our office, shop or
rescue centre. We will endeavour to put them on our website.
FOXY
We found Foxy on a trip to North Cyprus
in May 2011. She was running in the road and looked in
a very poor state - we thought she was a fox at first and
weren't sure if she'd been hit by a car so managed to coax
her into our car and took her back to our place to check her
over. We couldn't find anything of note, but she was
extremely thin, looked like she'd had pups at some point,
was absolutely smothered in ticks and sores and was very
frightened and weak. We decided to take her up to KAR
to be checked over more thoroughly and looked after - we
were flying back to the
UK
the next day. However, when we got home we kept
thinking about poor Foxy and decided that we would try and
bring her over to the UK to live with
us. This proved quite difficult through with the current
flight situation in transporting animals. Eventually
we did find a way over with an airline called Corendon who
flew to Brussels
(via Antalya)
- they agreed to take Foxy for 30 Euros! KAR sorted
the paperwork from the North Cyprus end and had all her vaccinations done and had
her spayed too. I flew over in August to pick her up
and accompany her to Brussels
where we were met by UK quarantine vehicle and transported back to the
UK
via Eurotunnel. Everything ran really smoothly and
Foxy is now happily settled in her huge kennel with her
own large bedroom kitted out with duvet, pillows and toys
(spoilt I know!) - this will hopefully be a good transition
period for her before she comes to live with us in our house
on 1st Jan 2012 when the UK quarantine laws are finally
relaxed.
We would definitely 'rescue' a dog from North Cyprus again -
the strays seem to have such wonderful personalities and it
was actually quite simple to do - and also not much
different in price to buying a pedigree puppy in the UK (in
fact a lot cheaper than some breeds)! Foxy has turned out
to be an absolute sweetheart and extremely loving - she
seems to appreciate every second of being here and
certainly shows her affection openly! I do feel
guilty though about leaving behind the hundreds of others
who are desperately in need of a loving home. Thanks
so much to everyone at KAR for looking after Foxy for those
few months and helping us to bring her back to her new home!
Just to let you know all ran smoothly at Ercan,
Brussels
and Calais and arrived safely
back in the UK this
morning - Foxy now settling in and enjoying her new
temporary home in quarantine! She is loving the space,
but hasn't quite got the hang of the bedroom and duvet
yet!!! She is so friendly and docile and loving the
kids and all the attention. The vet is coming this
afternoon to do the arrival health check and 1st of the
Rabies jabs
again
(silly I know, but
unfortunately is UK law to re-do
the jabs regardless or not of whether they have already been
done)! Ministry (DEFRA) coming on a 'spot check' visit
tomorrow morning!
Am attaching photos of her taken 1) at my apartment, 2)
during transit at Ercan & 3)
Brussels
and 4) in quarantine with 5) Foxy on her bed with her duvet
and pillows - she
loves her bed now! She is getting really
spoilt and has toys and bones too.
She is the only dog
I've ever owned who will actually fetch a ball - hooray!
We weighed her 2 days ago and was a bit shocked that she now
weighs 17 kilos!! Oops! Have had to ask the girls to
cut down her food a bit now! She looks good right now,
but don't really want her getting any bigger!
Erica Jones
Pixie a
Yorkshire terrier was in a truly awful state when he first
arrived at the KAR Rescue Centre. He had virtually no hair -
his eyelashes had gone - his eyes and nose were weeping
blood and his ears were just one big scab. He was with a
foster carer for 6 weeks of treatment and lots of TLC.
He is now a healthy happy silky coated Yorkshire terrier
living with his new human family and has another yorkie to
keep him company. To go with his new life he has a new name
- Kojak.
Miss Piggy had
been with KAR for over 3 years when she was picked to go to
a new home with an English lady. Unfortunately her owner had
to return to the UK and so Miss Piggy was returned to the
Centre. She was so sad to be back at the Centre, but, after
a short while, her owner returned to the TRNC and assured
the Centre staff that she really wanted Miss Piggy back.
Off Miss Piggy went - delighted to be going home again. It
was not to last though - staff arrived at the Centre one day
to find Miss Piggy tied to the fence. Poor Miss Piggy - she
could not settle and just pined and whined unable to eat.
She paced back and forth all day and lost weight. The staff
were convinced that she was ill but all the vet tests proved
negative. She was simply desperately unhappy at the Centre,
though the staff tried everything they could to make her a
little happier.
Then one day a visitor stopped to speak to Miss Piggy and a
bond between them was obvious. Several meetings later and
off went Miss Piggy to her new home.
She has been back to visit the staff at the Centre and
everyone is amazed at the difference - she is a bubbly happy
beautiful dog who is at last putting on weight. Hopefully
any future visits to KAR will only be to say: “Hello!”
I have been meaning to write to let you know
how Bingo is. He is.... REALLY, REALLY WELL & HAPPY!
In fact, he is a different dog to when he arrived - when I
think back to the first 3 weeks or so, he was obvioulsy
pretty traumatised (by the whole overland journey across
Europe, I expect), and I suppose he didn't know how long he
was going to be staying at our home after all. For all
he knew, it could have been another temporary stop, I
suppose. So it took him a while to realise that it
really is his house and (especially) his garden. Now
he keeps a permanent watch out for squirrels and foxes, and
he barks when someone comes to the door (even tho he is
really friendly when he finds out they aren't intruders!)
Also, he did us a really good deed about 2 months ago by
scaring off 2 burglars who climbed over our back fence!!!!
That day he definitely earned his keep! He is very
relaxed now and he is not so bothered by the traffic when we
are walking along the pavement of busy roads.
Everybody
loves him, even those friends of mine who don't aren't
usually even keen on dogs!
Thank you again for all
your help with getting him here.
Hope all goes well with
you in sunny Cyprus.
Best regards,
Tessa Abraham

Hi Margaret
Snow today so took the
opportunity to take some pictures of Vouni.
As you can see he is very well and has actually filled
out quite considerably at his back end, he almost looks
normal! if it wasn't for his bad leg.
He doesn't see to be hampered in any way and runs about
like a wild thing at the part with all the other dogs.
Initially we had to keep a very close eye on him with
other dogs as he could turn on them but now he is
friends with 99% of them.
He is also pals with 100%
of humans and is so laid back he is a great favoutie
with all our friends and family but still remains a good
guard dog.
Have a Very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Love Barry & Susan |

Dear everyone at KAR,
My name is Marijke and I’m following a college course
in Animal Care in the Netherlands and I went to Kyrenia to do a work
experience at Kyrenia Animal Rescue in October and November 2008.I stayed for 7 weeks in which I worked at the centre
and spent few days in
the other area’s of KAR. During my stay I was a guest at Suzanne’s
house and we became good friends.
|
 |
I really enjoyed my work experience and learnt a lot of
things. Although it was hard work and heartbreaking. I think it
would have been more heartbreaking to sit along to sideline and not
do anything for the animals. All the staff members were very patient
and kind and they welcomed me into the centre. During my first week
at the centre me and Boxy fell in love!!
Boxy was brought to the centre with her Mum when she
was only 6 weeks old and she is now 2,5 years old. After some
persuading my boyfriend, I
was allowed to have Boxy.
Only thing was, she had to get her rabies vaccines and had to have a
blood test done before she could travel.
So I went home, continued my college course. And after
waiting 6 months ….. I got on a plane to pick up my darling Boxy!!!
I stayed with Suzanne for the week, and I had a lovely time. We went
to the centre nearly every day. When I saw Boxy again after 6
months, she recognized me after 5 seconds. I was really moved, after
not seeing her for so long and after waiting all that time, she
still remembered me! After that she didn’t lose me out of her sight.
On June the 18th, we embarked on the
adventure. I was really scared about the flight and the transfer at
Istanbul, but all went well and at 10.45 hrs we landed at Schiphol
Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
It has now been more than a month
that she is with us, and she is settled. She loves to go to the beach and run around, she also likes the sea, although
she’s not too keen on swimming yet. She likes to lay on the
couch and she loves her cuddles and kisses. She gets on
really well with the dog of my parents and the dog of my
friend. She loves to play with other dogs as well and she
sometimes watches Animal planet :P
Well we’ll keep you updated!!!!
Lots of love to all,
Keep up the good work and hopefully I can come over again
and do some more work :P

Dear Margaret
and KAR team, It has been a
long time since I have been in touch - I can only apologise!
Not
sure if you remember me but I think of you all often and the amazing
work you are all carrying out. I volunteered with you having
just qualified as a vet in 2007 and the time I spent (as a guest of
Margaret's son) was one of the most enjoyable and rewarding times in
my career to date!I have been
following your progress on your website - the ER block looks like a
wonderful and welcome addition to the centre!
I keep reading all the
letters from people who have visited and am glad to see you seem to
be going from strength to strength.Since
returning from working with you I joined a small animal practice
near London and have worked there fro almost 2 years. In
September, however, I am heading off to Melbourne Australia for 6
months or more and hoping to work with an animal rescue centre
there. However, i believe they are lucky enough to have
government support....
Please send my
best wishes to Firdez if she is still working in Girne, and to the
rest of the team. Who knows, perhaps on my way back from Australia I
will pop by the Besparmak Mountains!!
Yours,
Rachel

Just to let you know that when we went to
Northern Cyprus we did not know that we would fall head over
heals in love with a little kitten who we called Lily. We could
not leave her behind so we are going
through the progress off bringing her back to England and we are
looking forward to giving her lots of love and cuddles.
The ladies who worked in the charity shop must off got fed up
with us waiting for them to unlock in the morning and saying
that we were going to take her home and could not leave her
behind. We would like to say a big thank you for all the hard
work that you all do it opened ours eyes up to see that
there are people out there who care.
We are now just waiting for Lily to come to England and do her
quarantine of 6 months she will be worth all the money in the
world when we get her.

Hi Margaret - I hope this finds you well. We thought
we would send you a quick update now Jill has left
quarantine and I have attached a couple of pics.
We went up to Peterborough on 7 March and got Jill
released from Little Acres Quarantine Kennel. She
coped very well with the 350 mile drive down to
Cornwall and immediately settled in to her new
environment. Over the
winter she had grown a wonderful coat back after we
had had it all cut off when she was in Cyprus so the
colder climate suits her very well. Her temperament
is just the same - she is the most gentle and mild
mannered dog we have ever come across. She is a new
dog for my daughter and the grandkids love her to
bits. On walks, she can be a bit unpredictable when
off the lead - sometimes reverting to previous
behaviour and just heading off when the mood takes
her. We never saw her play at all in Cyprus - her
life was focussed on survival more than enjoyment .
But this is changing fast. She loves football on the
beach and likes to
try to grab the frisbee when the kids are throwing
it. She makes short work of chewing it up when she
gets hold of it! We know that she will now have a
great life in the big open spaces, beaches and sea
in North Cornwall and although we cannot deny that
bringing her over was a big expense, we don't regret
it for a minute. Thanks again for all of your
assistance to achieve this and pass on our very best
wishes to all at KAR. We are continuing to sponsor
another dog in your care.
Best Wishes
Trevor & Linda Snoxell
A Happy New Year to you all.
