As spring is here there will be poison laid by people who think they are protecting their new lambs from foxes. Owners to make sure dogs are muzzled, kept on leads and never let out of sight.
Kyrenia Animal Rescue
Deliver Anti Poison Petition
After a year of collecting signatures for it's 'Anti Poison
Petition' Kyrenia Animal Rescue officials and supporters
were finally granted an appointment to hand the petition to
the Minister of the Environment Mustafa Gökmen.
Unfortunately the Minister had to attend Parliament so could
not be present for the appointment. KAR Chair Margaret Ray
handed the petition instead to Erhan Özkan,
Ministry Director.
The Ministers representative told the assembled press, tv and KAR supporters that the poison issue was something that Mustafa Gökmen was very interested in. Green Action Party president Dogan Sahir who has helped KAR with their quest was hopeful that changes will be made to the law there-by protecting the animals and the island.
Mrs Ray read a statement calling for changes to the law
governing the manufacture, sale and use of lethal poisons.
Poisoning in the Besparmark Mountains The attached photographs are taken by a member of Green Action Group in the area between Selvili hill and St. Hilarion Castle. There were some dead foxes and a dog, very close to each other which made us to think that they all must have been poisoned in the
same day.
Bugün Selvili Tepe ile St.Hilarion
arasındaki yolda yürürken birbirinden birkaç yüz metre uzakta ve
hemen yolun kenarında 3 adet ölü tilkiye rastladık. Daha
dikkatli bakınca parçalanmış olan tilkilerden birinin biraz
uzağında bir de köpek ölüsü gördük. Muhtemelen tilkiler birisi

President Talat has agreed to accept the KAR Poison Petition and the Presidential Office will contact KAR with an appointment date and time. Watch This Space!!11/2/08 Following the public meeting held at Watermill Hotel Girne, Kyrenia Animal Rescue representatives are endeavouring to secure an appointment with President Talat in order to present the Petition that calls for changes in the way that lethal poison is imported, sold and indiscriminately used.
It is hoped that the many supporters of KAR including
those who attended the meeting, pet owners, students and
all interested parties will support on the day that the
Petition is presented. It is planned that
Television and Press will be in attendance so the more
people that can attend at the appointed time the better.
KAR hope to show a strong and united front when meeting
with Mr. Talat.
The date and time of the
appointment will be posted on the web site.
Guidelines for Emergency Action in the event of Poisoning
Symptoms: Foaming at the mouth, body
trembling like movement under the skin, spasms, weakness and
diarrhoea.
Remember: Always carry your mobile phone with you when walking your dog and make sure that you have all veterinary telephone numbers entered into your phone. Avoid areas that have been reported as previously know for poison being put down. It is advisable to muzzle your dog whilst exercising your dog and it is running loose. If you find anything that looks suspicious like poisoned meat carefully pick it up and report find to KAR. If your animal picks up poisoned meat return to area as soon as possible and pick up any remains of the poison. Report incident to KAR, Police and local Belediyre or Muhktar.
Hello
We wanted to let you know that one of our lovely rescue
dogs, Sandy, was poisoned on Feb 9th by strychnine laced in
a bread sandwich and thrown into our garden in Ozankoy at
night - the 2nd time this has happened (the 1st was in May
2007 and was strychnine on lumps of chicken) and the third
dog we have lost to poison in 9 months. There was also one
sandwich left on the pavement outside our neighbour's which
killed a cat, as well as another lot in our garden which,
thankfully, our other dog did not find. Even a dose of
atropine given to Sandy immediately & the fantastic care of
Sibel from Pet Life could not save her.
Then, last Saturday 23rd Feb, we were walking on Alagadi
beach (the smaller one) and our 'survivor', Rosie, found a
lump of bone & skin laced with poison. Fortunately the
atropine we always carry worked this time & gave her enough
time for us to get to Sibel's where she and Emma again gave
wonderful care and saved her for the 3rd time - and she's
still only 14 months.
We're now having extra fencing (and it's already high)
and security lights fitted round the house & are even more
careful about where we walk, though it's hard not to be
neurotic. We do hope your petition and canvassing is
successful soon so no more innocent pets and strays are
killed. Meanwhile, many thanks for publicising where the
recent attacks are and for all the work you do to help the
dogs and cats. The only consolation we have in all this is
that we were able to give a happy if short life to 3
puppies, and were rewarded many times over, though it's hard
to get rid of the memories of their horrific deaths.
