April 08 Dog Show
What started some nine years ago as a small event to promote the
idea of owning and actually enjoying a dog has turned into a huge
event popular with dog owners and non dog owners alike. Despite the
amount of work that has to be done by the small group of KAR
volunteers during the lead up to and on the day of the
show, everyone involved enjoys the day and those sore feet are a
small price to pay for seeing the faces of the proud owners with
their dogs. A regular addition to the KAR Dog Show is chance for
people to see and hopefully give a home to puppies and kittens. A
small number of young animals are brought to the show and the
children just love them. This year five KAR puppies were given homes
and a number of the young hand reared kittens will be going to new
homes as soon as they are old enough. The total class entries this
year was 253.The Best KAR Rescue Dog class had 17 entries which was
three more than last year. Taking home the Mahoney Memorial Trophy,
awarded each year in memory of KAR supporters Anne and Reece
Mahoney, the beautiful Lassie owned by Emre won the class. U.K.
Judge Penny Carmichael confessed to shedding a quiet tear as she
judged the happy, healthy and much loved ex KAR dogs.
Best in show this year went to crossbred Pasa owned by Volkan. Judge
Mrs.Carmichael said that she felt that the little crossbred was
smiling whilst being shown, just asking to be chosen, and a very
popular choice it was. The day raised 11,700 lira for Kyrenia Animal
Rescue who continue to help the animals of North Cyprus.
When the show was over and all the clearing up had been done the sad
side of animal welfare in Cyprus was yet again present as three
puppies had been dumped under a truck in the near by car park. KAR
was able to take the puppies in to the safety of the Rescue Centre.
Perhaps they will be lucky enough to find good homes and next year
they will in the ring for the Best KAR Rescue Dog, let's hope so.
February

Ł340 plus 365 YTL was raised. KAR would like to thank Maureen
and Tony Hutchinson, Alison Dowey, Sue Petch, and Molly and
Terry Killinger for their help and for giving their time.
Coffee Morning January 08: First Student Visit of 2008
It was also an opportunity for the first year students, who all
come from Turkey, to see the workings of a non profit making
organisation. "The students are really keen to raise money to
help KAR and to raise public awareness," said Özlem. "We will be
having some brain storming sessions (in English) to come up with
new ideas, as well as collecting old clothes, shoes and books
for the Charity Shop in Girne."
Most of the students walked dogs and some were tearful as they
had to say 'good bye' to their new four legged friends.
