ANIMALS TO U.K.

THE PET TRAVEL SCHEME (PETS)  (Update to take effect January 1st 2012)

Under a ruling announced by the European Commission N. Cyprus will no longer be eligible to participate in the Pet Travel Scheme after 30th September 2004.  Kyrenia Animal Rescue has been helping animals through the process since 2002 when N. Cyprus joined the scheme are now running a campaign and lobbying all the relevant authorities to try to reverse their decision.

Animals travelling to the UK from N. Cyprus must therefore now go into six months quarantine.  As follows is our advice which is based on our experience of the current procedures.  The costs we quote, which as realistic as we can make them, are only approximate.  The actual costs will vary according to the animal, and price increases may occur during the process.

We are unfortunately not able to advise on quarantine and transportation costs within the UK.  Owners will need to make their own enquiries at quarantine premises.  The website of the UK Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) gives useful advice and has details of “approved” quarantine premises: www.defra.gov.uk/animal/quarantine/

1.   VACCINATIONS

The animal does not require any additional vaccination than these it already has as normally they are given them as standard procedure once in quarantine UK.

2.   QUARANTINE KENNELS & UK IMPORT LICENCE

The owner of the animal will be responsible for arranging quarantine premises.  Prior to the animal travelling an import license from The Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) must be obtained.  The quarantine premises will generally do this on the owners’ behalf, and will also arrange transportation from the airport.

The import licence must be sent to North Cyprus so that it can travel with the animal.

3.   VET EXPORT/HEALTH CERTIFICATE

This is required by the airline as confirmation that the animals is healthy and fit to travel. It is obtained from the Government Veterinary Department in Lefkosa or in Kyrenia. You will be required to show the animals Veterinary Card and Boarding Document.

4.   SPONSORSHIP

If the animal has come from the Rescue centre then sponsorship will be required from the time of choosing the animal to its date of departure.

5.  CARRIER BOX

The size and construction of the carrier box must conform to IATA standards. It must be large enough for the animal to have space above its head when standing/sitting, must be able to turn around lay down comfortably.

6.  FLIGHT TO UK AIRPORT

Following the collapse of Cyprus Turkish Airlines the only airline available to carry animals is Turkish Airlines. Animals travelling into quarantine must arrive in the UK under cargo manifest. Flights from Ercan (N. Cyprus) Airport with Turkish airlines will land at Istanbul where the services of an agent is required to transfer via cargo onto a UK flight.

7.  ARRIVAL IN THE UK INTO THE CARE OF QUARANTINE PREMISES

Quarantine premises staff will be responsible for collecting the animal and its paperwork at the airport, and clearing it through customs.  It will be then taken directly to the quarantine premises.
